Performances are at 7:30 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
The production chronicles the life of heroine, Heidi Holland, through laughter and tears. Heidi's life traverses the world of romance, sex, feminism, parenthood, and politics—though not necessarily in that order. The production is directed by Dr. Terry Lewis, Professor of Theatre.
"'The Heidi Chronicles' has been on my list to direct for several years," said Lewis. "The play is an excellent tool to teach our millennial students what it was like for those of us growing up as the baby boomer generation. To me, one of the most empowering messages from the play is as Margaret Mead's quote so aptly states, 'Every time we liberate a woman, we liberate a man.'"
Lewis does not consider this play to only be a feminist work, but one in which equality for all is the central theme. He hails the cast as one of the best he has worked with in his 12-year career at the Island University and is thrilled that each one of the members is truly invested.
With a plot that follows Heidi from high school in the 1960s to her career as a successful art historian more than 20 years later, the play's main themes deal with the changing role of women during this time period, describing both Heidi's ardent feminism during the 1970s and her eventual sense of betrayal during the 1980s.
In addition to the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the play boasts six 1989 Tony Award Nominations and two wins, including Best Play. It also scored seven 1989 Drama Desk Award nominations and three wins, including Outstanding New Play. "The Heidi Chronicles" was awarded the New York Drama Critics Circle award for Best Play in 1989, and was revived on Broadway in 2015.
