Chicanitas features 70 paintings by 29 artists from the renowned Chicano art collection of Cheech Marin. The collection, made up of paintings that average 16 square inches and smaller, includes a variety of styles such as photo-realism, abstractions, portraits and landscapes offering the viewer a window into the life of the artists.
This exhibition includes two local Corpus Christi artists: Joe Pena, Assistant Professor of Art at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and Ricardo Ruiz, Islander alumnus. Other artists include Carlos Almaraz, Frand Romero, Pattsi Valdez and Vincent Valdez.
Below are two events at the Art Museum of South Texas featuring Cheech Marin:
Tuesday, Sept. 22 from 3-5 p.m. – Area college and university art students are invited to join the collector of the Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection on a gallery walk through the exhibition as Marin discusses the exhibition, fine art and his collection. This discussion is free, but limited to university and college art students with a valid student ID.
Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 6-7:30 p.m. – Members of the museum are invited to view the new exhibitions Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection, and StudioOrbit: Pena and Ruiz (smaller collection with two local artists in Cheech's collection) and have the chance to meet the Cheech Marin and local artists Joe Pena and Ricardo Ruiz. This event is free for museum members and $20 for the general public.
